Dog Friendly Suffolk: The Best Beaches, Pubs and Walks

An honest, comprehensive guide to the best dog-friendly beaches, pubs and walks across Suffolk, including which beaches allow dogs all year round.

Dog friendly Suffolk: a proper guide for owners

Suffolk is one of the most genuinely dog-friendly counties in England. Not the "dogs allowed in the bar but not the garden" sort of dog-friendly, the real kind, with miles of empty beaches, pubs that bring your dog a bowl before they bring you a menu, and walks where you'll meet more spaniels than people. Here's everything you need to know.

Best dog-friendly beaches in Suffolk

Year-round, no restrictions:

  • Walberswick Beach, vast, dune-backed, dogs everywhere, all year.
  • Covehithe, wild, empty, dramatic. Off-lead heaven.
  • Dunwich Beach, long shingle, easy access from Dunwich Heath, dogs welcome year-round.
  • Sizewell Beach, clean, quiet, dog-friendly all year.
  • Shingle Street, properly remote, perfect for off-lead recall practice.
  • Kessingland Beach, long, dog-walker territory, especially out of season.

Seasonal restrictions on some sections (May to September) but otherwise welcome:

  • Southwold, the central section near the pier has summer restrictions, but the sections south of the pier (towards the harbour) and north of the pier (towards Easton Bavents) are dog-friendly all year. Plenty of beach to choose from.
  • Aldeburgh, similar setup, with most of the beach dog-friendly all year.
  • Felixstowe, restrictions on the central promenade section in summer.

Always double-check the latest signage at the beach in case anything's changed.

Best dog-friendly walks in Suffolk

  • Dunwich Heath (National Trust), heather, woodland, sea views, off-lead in most areas. The café back at the car park has water bowls and welcomes muddy dogs.
  • Minsmere RSPB, dogs allowed on lead on the public footpath that runs along the beach side; check signs for the reserve.
  • The Walberswick to Dunwich coastal path, about 4 miles each way through reed beds, marshes and beach. Mostly off-lead, but watch for ground-nesting birds in spring.
  • Rendlesham Forest, huge, varied, off-lead in most areas. Marked trails for every fitness level.
  • The Sailors' Path between Aldeburgh and Snape, flat, easy, mostly off-lead.

Best dog-friendly pubs in Suffolk

These are the ones we send guests to:

  • The Anchor at Walberswick, dogs welcome throughout, water bowls, the best fish and chips for miles.
  • The Harbour Inn at Southwold, old-school waterside spot, dogs at the bar, brilliant.
  • The Lord Nelson, Southwold, courtyard's a hit on a sunny day, dogs everywhere.
  • The Eels Foot at Eastbridge, properly rural, log fire, dogs welcome.
  • The Ship at Dunwich, dog-friendly, sea-air-blasted, magic in winter.
  • The White Horse at Westleton, pub with rooms, equally happy with humans and dogs.
  • The Dolphin Inn, Thorpeness, bright, friendly, brilliant after a Meare-and-beach walk.
  • The Crown at Snape, dog-friendly spot close to the Maltings.
  • The Sole Bay Inn, Southwold, laid-back, locals' favourite, dog-friendly throughout.

Practical tips for a dog-friendly Suffolk trip

  • Adders are present on the heathlands in summer. Stay on paths in heather and bracken from April to September; if your dog is bitten, get to a vet straight away.
  • Tide times matter for the long beach walks, Walberswick to Dunwich is much better at low or mid-tide.
  • Sea swimming is generally safe but the shingle beaches are steep, keep an eye on small or older dogs near the water's edge.
  • Ticks are around year-round. Check after any heath or woodland walk.
  • Grazing animals are common on the marshes, dogs on lead near livestock, please.

Stay somewhere that genuinely welcomes dogs

Plenty of cottages tolerate dogs. We welcome them, proper towel by the door, a few treats in the welcome basket, secure outside space where possible, and walks from the front door. Many of our Southwold, Walberswick and Suffolk Coast cottages are dog-friendly.
