A Weekend in Aldeburgh: What to See, Do and Eat
Two days, one Suffolk town, and one of the best food, music and walking weekends in England. Here's how to do Aldeburgh properly.
A perfect weekend in Aldeburgh
Aldeburgh is small, but it punches massively above its weight. World-class music at Snape Maltings, the most famous fish-and-chip queue in England, a Maggi Hambling sculpture on the beach, a high street of independent shops, and walks that'll make you reach for your camera every five minutes. Here's how to spend two perfect days here.
Friday evening: settle in slowly
Arrive, dump bags, walk straight down to Aldeburgh Beach. Get the lie of the land, fishing boats hauled up onto the shingle, fresh fish sold straight off them, the steely North Sea, the long shingle sweep that Britten and Pears made internationally famous. Pop into The Cross Keys (right on the seafront) to soak up the sunset.
For dinner on a Friday, 152 Aldeburgh is the dependable smart-casual option, modern British, brilliant local seafood, walk-from-the-cottage proximity. Or queue (yes, properly queue) for the legendary Aldeburgh Fish & Chip Shop, eat on the prom, and feel smug about your decision.
Saturday morning: coffee, walks and the Scallop
Coffee at Munchies or pastries from Two Magpies Aldeburgh to start. Then walk north along the beach for about half a mile until you reach Maggi Hambling's Scallop, a four-metre stainless steel sculpture inscribed with words from Britten's Peter Grimes. It divides locals; we love it. Sit a while.
Carry on north and you'll reach Thorpeness in a couple of miles, a beach walk, then around the Meare boating lake, past the House in the Clouds, and back. Lunch at The Dolphin Inn in Thorpeness if you want to stretch the morning into the afternoon.
Saturday afternoon: shops, sea air and a swim
Back in Aldeburgh, the High Street is genuinely worth slow-walking. Standouts: the Aldeburgh Bookshop (one of the best independent bookshops in the country), Slate for design-led homewares, the wonderful Aldeburgh Fishmongers, and a small handful of art galleries.
If the weather's playing, swim. The shingle is steep but the sea is clean and brisk. If the weather isn't playing, the Aldeburgh Cinema is a beautiful little independent that often shows the Met Opera live and the latest indie releases.
Saturday evening: dinner
The Lighthouse is the long-standing local favourite, bistro food, fish-heavy menu, packed and brilliant. The Brudenell is the smarter beachfront option. The Mill Inn and The White Hart are the proper local spots. You won't go wrong with any of them. Book.
Sunday morning: Snape Maltings
A 15-minute drive inland, Snape Maltings is the cultural beating heart of the Suffolk Coast, the world-class concert hall founded by Benjamin Britten, plus a beautiful collection of independent shops, a smokehouse, two excellent restaurants, river walks, and a sculpture trail. Even with no concert booked, it's worth a proper morning.
Walk the Sailors' Path back towards Aldeburgh if you want a proper hike (about 4 miles); otherwise drive back via Snape village for a poke around the antiques shops.
Sunday lunch: the right way to end
For the perfect Sunday lunch, The Westleton Crown (15 minutes north) is one of the very best Sunday roasts on the Suffolk Coast, proper beef, properly done, with a fire going in winter and the garden in summer. The Eels Foot at Eastbridge is the gentler, more rural alternative. The Anchor at Walberswick if you want a beach-walk-then-roast double.
What to skip
Honestly? Not much. The Aldeburgh Festival in June is intense, book accommodation months ahead, and August is the busiest month, so if you want it quieter aim for May, June (outside festival), September or October.
Where to stay
The very best Aldeburgh weekends are the ones where you don't get back in the car. Most of our Aldeburgh and surrounding cottages are within walking distance of the High Street and the beach, so you can wander out to dinner without checking the time.
