Walberswick beach huts and marshland

Across the river

Walberswick Accommodation

Walberswick is what people picture when they picture the Suffolk Coast — a 200-house village across the river from Southwold, marshland one way, beach the other, two perfect pubs, no traffic. It's where Suffolk locals quietly go on holiday.

There's no high street — just a green, a beach, a harbour, and the two pubs. The Anchor and The Bell. Both excellent, both dog-friendly. That's most of the village.

Most of our Walberswick cottages are within five minutes' walk of either the beach or the harbour. Parking is much easier than Southwold but still worth booking off-street in peak summer.

What to do in Walberswick

Crabbing from the harbour wall — buy bacon and a line from the village shop. Throw the crabs back at the end.

Walk the dunes to Dunwich — about 4 miles of empty beach, ending at the Flora Tea Rooms.

Foot ferry to Southwold (Easter to October) — beats the long walk over Bailey Bridge.

British Open Crabbing Championship in August — genuinely the village's biggest event.

Where to eat & drink

The Anchor — gastropub with rooms, garden running to the marsh, dogs welcome everywhere.

The Bell — 600-year-old village pub on the green, big garden, brilliant in summer.

Walberswick Tea Room — open most of the year, perfect after a beach walk.

For dinner out: walk over the ferry to Southwold — The Crown or The Lord Nelson.

Why people pick Walberswick over Southwold

No through traffic. Almost silent at night.

Dogs on the beach year-round.

Beach huts and marshland — the photographic Suffolk Coast.

Two pubs walking distance of every cottage. That's about it. Which is the point.

Frequently asked

Questions guests ask us

How do you get to Walberswick?

By car: A12, then through Reydon. By foot ferry from Southwold (Easter to October). On foot via Bailey Bridge over the marshes.

Are dogs allowed on Walberswick beach?

Yes — off-lead, all year. One of the best dog beaches on the Suffolk Coast.

How long does the foot ferry take?

Two minutes across the river. Runs on demand from 10am to 5pm, Easter to October, weather permitting. Cash only.

Is there a shop?

A small village shop selling essentials, bacon for the crabbing, ice creams. For a proper shop, drive to Southwold (Adnams Cellar & Kitchen) or Friday Street Farm Shop.

Is Walberswick quieter than Southwold?

Significantly. Southwold can feel busy in August; Walberswick rarely does, even on a sunny Saturday.

Can I park in Walberswick?

Yes — there's a village car park near the green and the beach car park. Both fill in peak summer; off-street at the cottage is a real win.

Two pubs, one beach, no traffic

Walberswick, properly.

Cottages a short walk from the harbour, the dunes and both pubs.
