Southwold beach huts and lighthouse on the Suffolk Coast

Holiday Cottages in Southwold

Southwold is the Suffolk seaside village everyone has heard of, and the one that genuinely lives up to it — pastel beach huts, a working pier, an Adnams pub on every corner, and a Georgian high street that hasn't been ruined by chains.

Our Southwold cottages are all within easy walking distance of the beach or the high street — we don't market a cottage as 'Southwold' if it's actually in Reydon a mile out.

Parking in Southwold in July and August is genuinely difficult. Every cottage on our books lists exactly what parking it has — and if it doesn't have off-street parking, we tell you where the nearest reliable spot is.

What to do in Southwold

Walk the beach huts. Sit on the pier. Climb the lighthouse on a Saturday morning when it's open.

Adnams Brewery tour — fun, properly informative, ends in a tasting. Book ahead.

Crabbing at Walberswick across the river (foot ferry runs in summer) — or walk the long way over Bailey Bridge.

St Edmund's Church — 15th century, big enough to be a cathedral in a smaller town.

Where to eat & drink in Southwold

The Crown — Adnams' flagship pub-hotel. The smart option for dinner.

The Lord Nelson — proper pub, locals' choice, garden behind.

The Sole Bay Inn — pint-and-a-conversation pub, by the lighthouse.

Two Magpies Bakery — brunch, sourdough, queue out the door on Saturdays.

Sole Bay Fish Company — fish straight off the boat, eat-in or takeaway.

Best time to visit Southwold

June and September are perfect — warm sea, quiet beaches, no parking stress.

August is the family month — busy but brilliant if you have kids and want them to swim every day.

October to March is for romantic woodburner weekends. Quiet, dramatic, all yours.

Avoid August bank holiday unless you've booked the year before.

Frequently asked

Questions guests ask us

Can you walk to Southwold beach from town?

Yes — most of our Southwold cottages are 5–15 minutes' walk to the beach. The high street is just behind the seafront, so most cottages are walking distance to both.

Is parking included?

Some cottages have off-street parking (listed on the page). Others rely on on-street or the town car parks, which fill up by 10am in peak summer. We tell you exactly what to expect.

Are dogs allowed on Southwold beach?

The central section (between the two groynes either side of the pier) is dog-free May to September. North and south of that, dogs are welcome all year.

How far is Southwold from London?

About 120 miles — 2h 30m by car via the A12, or train to Halesworth/Darsham (around 2h 15m) plus a 15-minute taxi.

Is Southwold busy?

In July and August, yes — particularly the high street and the central beach. Out of school holidays it's a walking-pace village even in good weather.

Is there a Wetherspoons or chain restaurants?

Almost nothing chain. The high street is independent shops and Adnams-owned pubs. Part of the appeal.
