Aldeburgh shingle beach with fishing boats

Suffolk's cultural capital

Holiday Cottages in Aldeburgh

Aldeburgh is Southwold's quieter, more refined cousin. Shingle beach with fishing boats on it. Britten's Aldeburgh Festival each June. The best fish and chips on the East Coast. A high street with more independent shops than chains.

Our Aldeburgh cottages are within walking distance of the high street and beach. Parking is easier than Southwold but still worth checking — off-street is a bonus in July and August.

Aldeburgh is the food and music end of the coast. If you want a quiet, cultured Suffolk weekend rather than a beach-hut-and-arcade one, this is your base.

What to do in Aldeburgh

Walk the beach end to end — Aldeburgh to Thorpeness and back is about 4 miles of mostly shingle and dunes.

The fish huts — buy what landed that morning. Open most days, weather permitting.

Snape Maltings, 6 miles inland — concerts in summer, year-round shopping, riverside walk, the brilliant Crown Hotel restaurant.

Maggi Hambling's Scallop sculpture on the north beach — controversial, photogenic, worth the walk.

Sailing from the yacht club — RYA-recognised, day courses in summer.

Where to eat & drink in Aldeburgh

The Lighthouse — Aldeburgh's institution. Book ahead in summer.

Sea Spice — surprisingly excellent Indian on the High Street.

The White Hart — proper pub, locally loved.

Munchies — daytime spot for sandwiches and good coffee.

Aldeburgh Fish & Chip Shop — the queue is always there; the chips are worth it.

When to visit Aldeburgh

June for the Aldeburgh Festival — book accommodation in January at the latest.

August for family beach days — busier, but the town absorbs it well.

September is our top pick — warm sea, restaurants quiet enough to walk into, parking easy.

Winter is wonderful for woodburner weekends — and the Lighthouse stays open.

Frequently asked

Questions guests ask us

How far is Aldeburgh from Southwold?

About 22 miles by road (40 minutes), but the coastal route via Dunwich and Walberswick is more interesting if you have the time.

Can you walk to the beach from the cottages?

Yes — Aldeburgh is small enough that every cottage on our books is within walking distance of both the beach and the high street.

What's the Aldeburgh Festival?

A two-week classical music festival at Snape Maltings each June, founded by Benjamin Britten. Tickets release in late winter; accommodation books out fast.

Is Aldeburgh dog-friendly?

Yes — most cottages welcome dogs. The central beach is restricted May–September, but the north end (past the Scallop) and south are dog-friendly year-round.

Is parking easier than Southwold?

Marginally. The seafront and high street car parks fill by 10am in peak summer; off-street parking at the cottage is genuinely valuable.

Best food in Aldeburgh?

The Lighthouse for dinner, Munchies for lunch, the fish hut for taking home, and The Aldeburgh Fish & Chip Shop for the rite of passage.

Walk-to-everything Aldeburgh

Aldeburgh, properly.

Walk to the fish huts, walk to dinner, walk home. The cultural Suffolk weekend.
