The Southwold beach rules, plainly
The central section of Southwold beach, broadly the stretch in front of the beach huts and either side of the pier, carries a seasonal dog restriction through the main summer season. Signage is posted at the promenade access points and is enforced.
North of the pier towards the Denes and Easton Bavents, and south towards the harbour, dogs are generally fine. Check the signs on the day, because the exact boundaries and dates are set locally and can shift.
The simplest workaround is Walberswick, across the river. Dogs are welcome on that beach year-round, the sand is wider and it is a far calmer place to throw a ball in August. It is a five minute drive round, a short walk over the Bailey bridge, or the rowing-boat ferry in season.
