The leisure side of the coast

Holiday and short-stay accommodation near Sizewell, Aldeburgh and Thorpeness

Aldeburgh and Thorpeness sit just south of Sizewell along the shingle. They are lovely places for a holiday, a weekend visit or a short work trip with time to enjoy the coast.

Aldeburgh is roughly four miles south of Sizewell and Thorpeness lies in between, so the whole stretch is within a short drive. You can walk between them along the beach or the coast path, which is one of the nicest ways to spend an evening on this part of the coast.

Our homes nearest to this stretch are in Sizewell, Leiston and Middleton, each a short drive from Aldeburgh and Thorpeness. They are whole houses, so you have room to spread out, cook if you want to, and park easily, which can be hard in Aldeburgh in summer.

Aldeburgh

Aldeburgh has a long, wide high street with independent shops, cafés and well known fish and chips, and a shingle beach where fishermen still sell their catch from huts. The Moot Hall and the Scallop sculpture on the beach are two of the town's best known sights.

Music lovers come for the Aldeburgh Festival and concerts at nearby Snape Maltings. Outside festival time, the town is quieter and perfect for a slow weekend.

Thorpeness

Thorpeness is a small, unusual seaside village built as a holiday resort in the early twentieth century. You can hire a rowing boat on the Meare, look up at the House in the Clouds, and walk the beach north towards Sizewell.

Sizewell and the coast path

Sizewell beach has a popular café and a wide shingle shore. From here the Suffolk Coast Path runs south to Thorpeness and Aldeburgh, and north towards RSPB Minsmere and Dunwich. Many visitors walk one way and get a taxi back.

Eating and drinking nearby

Aldeburgh has a good choice of restaurants, pubs and cafés along the high street, and fish and chips eaten on the sea wall is something of a local tradition. Thorpeness has a café and a pub, and Sizewell beach café is popular for breakfast and lunch. In summer and at weekends, booking a table in advance is sensible.

If you would rather eat in, all of our nearby homes have fully equipped kitchens, and Leiston has supermarkets a few minutes away.

When to visit

Summer and the school holidays are the busiest times on this part of the coast, and the Aldeburgh Festival in June brings many visitors. Spring and autumn are quieter, with good walking weather and easier parking. Winter can be bracing on the shingle, but a walk followed by a warm pub is hard to beat.

If you are visiting someone working nearby, a short break at the weekend is a good way to see the coast together. Search your dates on Book Your Stay to see which of our homes are free.
