Orford and Sudbourne

Holiday cottages near Orford

Quiet countryside homes within easy reach of Orford, its castle, its quay and the wild Suffolk coastline beyond.

Orford is a small, unspoilt village on the Suffolk coast, set where the River Ore runs behind the long shingle spit of Orford Ness. It is known for its twelfth-century castle keep, its quay with boats coming and going, and its reputation for smoked fish and oysters. It is a place to slow down, eat well and walk for miles.

Our closest home to Orford is a dog-friendly three-bedroom cottage in Sudbourne, the neighbouring village just inland, which has a large enclosed garden. We also list homes in Sutton and Rendlesham, which are further away but still within a reasonable drive of Orford through the forest roads.

These homes are booked by enquiry. Send your dates from the property page and we will come back to you. For more ideas on what to see and do, our Orford visitor guide covers the village in more depth.

Orford Castle and the village

Orford Castle, cared for by English Heritage, has an unusual many-sided keep, and from the top you can look out over the village, the river and Orford Ness. The village itself is compact and easy to explore on foot, with a market square, a church, a couple of pubs and places to buy local food. Check English Heritage for current opening times before visiting.

The quay, the river and Orford Ness

Orford Quay is the place to watch boats on the River Ore and, in season, to catch a boat trip. Orford Ness, the long shingle spit across the water, is cared for by the National Trust and is reached by ferry from the quay on its open days. It is a strange, beautiful landscape with a fascinating history, and it is worth checking the National Trust website for the current ferry and opening schedule before you plan your day.

Walkers can follow the river wall paths from Orford for wide views across the marshes, which are good for birdwatching at most times of year.

Woods, walks and nearby days out

Inland from Orford, Tunstall Forest and Rendlesham Forest offer miles of tracks for walking and cycling, and dogs enjoy them too. Snape Maltings, by the River Alde, has shops, galleries and concerts. Aldeburgh and Woodbridge are both within a reasonable drive for a day out, and Sutton Hoo is a short trip beyond Woodbridge.

Orford is quiet, particularly outside the summer months, so it suits people who want peace rather than nightlife. A car is useful for getting around, as public transport in this part of Suffolk is limited.

Staying in Sudbourne

Sudbourne is a small village a short drive from Orford, surrounded by farmland and woods. Our Sudbourne cottage sleeps up to six, has three bedrooms and two bathrooms, and its enclosed garden makes it a good choice for guests travelling with dogs. Dogs are welcome for an additional fee, as stated on the property page.

Eating and drinking around Orford

Food is a big part of any visit to Orford. The village is known for its smoked fish and locally grown oysters, and there are places to buy fresh seafood and local produce to cook back at your cottage. The pubs in the village serve hearty meals after a day on the marshes. If you are staying in Sudbourne, Orford is close enough for an easy evening out, and the drive back is short. For a bigger choice of restaurants, Aldeburgh and Woodbridge are both within reach by car.
