Leiston is the closest town to Sizewell and the most practical choice if you want a very short commute. It has supermarkets, takeaways, pubs, a pharmacy and a small independent cinema, so day-to-day life is easy without driving far.

Saxmundham is a little further inland, usually around a 15 to 20 minute drive to Sizewell depending on traffic and which part of town you are in. It has the railway station, two large supermarkets and a pleasant high street, which suits anyone travelling home by train at weekends.

Aldeburgh and Thorpeness are the leisure side of the coast: shingle beaches, the Meare, good restaurants and long walks. They suit visitors, families and people who want a more relaxed base for a shorter stay.

Villages such as Middleton, Theberton and Yoxford offer quieter roads, bigger gardens and more space for parking, in exchange for a slightly longer drive.

A car or van is the easiest way to get about. The A12 runs north to south a few miles inland, linking Ipswich, Saxmundham, Yoxford and Lowestoft, and the B1122 and B1119 bring you down to Leiston. Rush hour can be slow around road works, so allow extra time on your first few days.

If you are arriving by train, Saxmundham is the nearest station, with services towards Ipswich, where you can connect for London. Taxis can be booked from the station, but it is wise to arrange one in advance.
