Choosing where to stay in Suffolk
The right base depends on what you want from your break. If beach walks and fish and chips by the harbour are top of the list, the coast between Southwold and Aldeburgh is hard to beat. Southwold has its pier, lighthouse and colourful beach huts, and Walberswick sits just across the river. Aldeburgh, a little further south, is known for its shingle beach and its long high street.
If you would rather have space and quiet, the countryside around Framlingham, Saxmundham and the Blyth valley offers rolling farmland, village pubs and big skies, while still being a reasonable drive from the sea. Further south, Woodbridge and the Deben estuary give you a pretty market town with river walks, and Orford offers a castle, a quay and access to some of the wildest coastline in the county.
